Dr Joseph Cheriyan

Consultant Clinical Pharmacologist & Physician

I am the senior-most NHS consultant in the NHS Clinical Pharmacology department. Apart from hypertension, cardiovascular risk and general/acute medicine inpatient and outpatient work, I conduct clinical trials of novel and repurposed drugs in human to test their safety and efficacy. I am also actively involved in research and education as described. I am a senior advisor to the Malaysian Ministry of Health's Scientific Review Panel for Phase 1 trials.

My current role

I am an actively practicing clinician who sees patients at the front door contributing to the Acute Medicine Service covering a myriad of general medical issues. I also see patients at Addenbrooke's and the Saffron Walden outreach clinic for hypertension (blood pressure) and general medical problems.

I am also an active clinical researcher. My research focuses on vascular (blood vessel) function and inflammation, nitric oxide bio-availability and vascular-ventricular interactions. I have a keen interest in identifying novel agents that may improve vascular health, as measured in human models of health and disease. I was the first MHRA accredited Phase 1 (first-in-human) non-oncology physician on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus working across the University/NHS domains since 2007.

I lead an active programme of educational programmes for junior doctors and medical students. This includes the Cambridge Medical Seminars (opens in a new tab) and the Experimental Medicine Training Initiative (opens in a new tab) for doctoral clinical/non-clinical students. This programme of education expanded internationally in 2018 with courses in SE Asia in conjunction with the Royal College of Physicians.

Previous history

I held a joint secondment post alongside my NHS post with the GSK Clinical Unit Cambridge from 2007-2020. This provided insights into an MHRA accredited Phase 1 unit conducting first-in-human Phase 1 through to Phase 2 clinical trials to industry standards.

I was previously the Senior Examiner for our Wellcome Trust funded Translational Medicine and Therapeutics MPhil programme. I was Vice Chair of the Health Research Authority (HRA) Cambridge Central Research Ethics Committee for more than 10 years.

Prior to joining the Trust in 2001, I trained in Sheffield and undertook postgraduate training in Nottingham and London (Hammersmith Hospital and St George's).
