My current role
I spend about 50 per cent of my time providing clinical care for patients with renal diseases; 40 per cent helping to manage the hospital, in particular regarding the professional governance of doctors; and 10 per cent in education and training of medical students and junior doctors.
Previous history
I qualified as a doctor following study in Cambridge (pre-clinical) and Oxford (clinical).
I worked as a junior doctor in London and Oxford, where I combined clinical work with research (in [now] Prof Peter Ratcliffe's laboratory).
I was first appointed as a consultant in Oxford in 1993 before moving to a consultant post in Cambridge in 1996.
