My current role
I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. In 2023, I was awarded a Professorship (Hunterian Award) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
My clinical interests include surgery for brain tumours (with a special interest in skull base/pituitary surgery), neurotrauma, cerebrovascular disorders, neuroendoscopy, spine surgery, and general neurosurgery.
My research utilises a variety of study designs, including observational studies, dry laboratory experiments (bioengineering), and qualitative (including advanced imaging), but the main emphasis is on the conduct of randomised trials. For my methodological work, I collaborate with the IDEAL group (University of Oxford), COMET group (University of Liverpool), and the MRC Biostatistics Unit (University of Cambridge). I was the Co-Chief Investigator of the RESCUE-ASDH and Dex-CSDH trials. Currently, I am the Chief Investigator of two NIHR-funded randomised trials (SOS and TOP-TBI) and the Associate Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Acquired Brain and Spine Injury.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led the neurosurgical theme of the CovidSurg portfolio of studies, which resulted in several practice-changing outputs, published in journals such as The Lancet and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
I am internationally recognised for my research on acquired brain injury and PET imaging for pituitary adenomas, with publications in journals such as NEJM, Lancet Neurology, JAMA Neurology, PLOS Medicine, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
I am also committed to advancing Global Neurosurgery and advocating for the provision of high-quality neurosurgical care to all those who need it. I am an active member of the WFNS Global Neurosurgery committee. Under my leadership as the chair of the WFNS Young Neurosurgeons committee from 2019–2021, the committee made significant progress in defining and beginning to address the needs of Young Neurosurgeons globally. Finally, I was the inaugural chair and co-founder of the British Neurosurgical Trainee Research Collaborative, a research network of neurosurgical trainees in the UK that has delivered several high-quality, multicentre studies.
Previous history
I completed my neurosurgical training in Cambridge and received subspecialty fellowship training in anterior skull base/pituitary neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. I hold a Masters (UCL, 2007) and a PhD in Clinical Neurosciences (University of Cambridge, 2016). My primary medical degree was awarded by the University of Athens, Greece, in 2006.
