This is a time of life that is naturally challenging, but every parent deserves to thrive during pregnancy and after the birth. Try some of the following ideas to support your wellbeing.
Self-help tips
- Ask for help. No-one can do this alone - ask for plenty of help from friends and family if possible. You might be surprised at how much people do want to help and support you.
- Make time for yourself (with help if needed) - so that you can do things like taking short walks, nap, or something else that’s just for you.
- If you are struggling with finances, housing, bereavement, isolation, or any other life challenges, search for help online, ask your GP, or find lots of sources of support at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough website. (opens in a new tab)
- Try to stay physically active - even a 5min walks around the block can be helpful
- Keep connected - stay in touch with existing friends and family, and try to make friends with other new parents, perhaps through your local Children’s Centre or other community organisations
- Practice relaxation, mindfulness or grounding exercises - there is lots of content online on how to do this, look for NHS and charities for free resources
- Do something creative - this could be something by yourself, but it’s even better to do something with others. There are lots of local options at H.A.Y website. (opens in a new tab)
Some people might struggle to do any of these, perhaps because they feel they don’t deserve it, feel there are too many other things to worry about, or simply can’t manage to complete these tasks while they’re feeling so low or anxious. If you have tried some of these ideas and it hasn’t really helped your difficult thoughts and feelings, please seek help.
