About the patientMpower hand-held spirometer

The patientMpower hand-held spirometer

patientMpower Inc is a digital healthcare company providing technology solutions for patients across a range of therapy areas. Their hand-held spirometer device enables lung function measurements (the blowing test that is usually done in clinic) to be performed remotely at home. You will either be given the device in clinic or we will arrange to send it to you, and then talk through how to use it.

The patientMpower app

You will need to download the patientMpower app on your mobile device to pair to the spirometer device. The mobile platform enables medical staff to track lung function results, allowing them to better manage your treatment. More than one person can download the app onto their mobile devices; however, the app currently needs to be linked to a single email address.

How can I use the patientMpower app with my doctor or healthcare provider?

Your healthcare provider will enrol you so you can record lung function measurements. You will only be required to record your lung function when asked to do so by your respiratory team. This will usually be in association with a clinic appointment but may also be if you are unwell.

Setting up the patientMpower app

Step 1: Download the app

  1. Open the enrolment email from info@patientmpower.com.
  2. Click on the first link to set your password – if the link doesn’t work, you can copy and paste the web address provided in the email.
  3. The password you choose should be at least eight characters long and contain a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers (at least one of each).
  4. Return to the email and select the second link to download the application.
  5. Download the app from either the Apple Store or the Google Play Store on a mobile or tablet device. Make sure the patientMpower for cystic fibrosis app is selected.
  6. Log in to the app using the email and password you have created.
  7. Read the privacy policy and terms of use.

Step 2: Set up the spirometer

  1. Open the box and remove the device and the two AAA batteries.
  2. Slide down to open the spirometer battery door.
  3. Insert both batteries.
  4. Slide the battery door back on.

Step 3: Pairing the devices using Bluetooth

  1. Before pairing, ensure that Bluetooth enabled on your phone or tablet.
  2. Select ‘More’ in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen on the opening page of the app.
  3. Select ‘Bluetooth Devices’.
  4. You should see the device appear (eg Spirobank Smart). Click this and press 'pair' in the pop up.
  5. Once paired you should see a success message.

Step 4: Taking a measurement with the spirometer

Press the profile icon (line drawing of a head, top left) to add height and weight.

Please note while taking the measurement:

  • try not to cough
  • maintain good posture
  • breathe out hard for six seconds
  1. Press the add measurement button ('+' sign in red circle) and select 'Add Spirometry'.
  2. Follow the instructions on screen to take the measurement.
  3. Take two or three normal breaths and then one slow deep breath, then blow as hard and fast as you can. Keep going until you completely empty your lungs.

Care instructions for the spirometer

  1. You should clean the turbine and mouthpiece once a week using hot soapy water for two to three minutes, then allow to air dry.
  2. The lifetime of the spirometer is five years. If a problem arises, the device is covered by warranty for a period of 24 months.
  3. If the mouthpiece or turbines need replacement, please ask your local team.

Bluetooth troubleshooting

  1. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on the patient’s mobile or tablet.
  2. Remove the batteries from the monitoring device and replace them. Try to re-pair the device via Bluetooth.
  3. Ensure the device is not paired to any other phones or tablets in the patient’s surroundings. If it has connected with another device, it will need to be unpaired before it can connect to the patient’s app.
  4. Check to see if the device has paired to the phone or tablet rather than the app itself. You can check this in the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth settings under ‘my devices’. Unpair the device if it has connected to the phone or tablet, then follow the initial Bluetooth pairing instructions.
