NHS and care volunteer responders (NHSCVR) programme for virtual ward patients

Patient information A-Z

The NHSCVR programme is an NHS-approved volunteering programme supporting the NHS and communities across England. It connects volunteers to tasks requested by healthcare professionals. If you are on a virtual ward, you may receive help from this volunteer programme.

What is the ‘Pick Up and Deliver’ service?

Volunteers help the NHS by picking up medication and medical devices from hospital sites and delivering them directly to you at home. This service ensures that you receive your medication and medical devices in a timely manner, while being cared for on a virtual ward.

This is a free service with no cost to you or the NHS (Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). All volunteer expenses are covered by the programme.

How are volunteers recruited?

Volunteers are recruited and managed by the NHSCVR programme. They undergo the necessary background checks and receive guidance and support to ensure they can confidently and effectively carry out their tasks.

What personal information is given to a volunteer?

To ensure that your prescriptions are collected and delivered correctly, volunteers will need to know your name and address. They are trained to handle your personal information following strict data protection and confidentiality guidelines.

Can I opt out of this service?

If you prefer not to have your medication delivered by a volunteer, simply let the virtual ward team know at any point throughout your care. They will offer you alternative options. These may include nominating someone you trust (a family member or friend) to collect your medication.

Can I withdraw my consent?

Yes, you can withdraw your consent at any time by calling the virtual hub on 01223 806 806. Once you notify us, we will offer you another option for receiving your medication. If you have any concerns or questions about the Pick Up and Deliver service during your time with the virtual ward, please don’t hesitate to contact the virtual hub.

What other services can volunteers provide?

The NHSCVR programme offers additional support. If you ever feel isolated, lonely, or just want someone to have a chat with, our volunteers are here to offer a friendly voice and a listening ear. You can call our support team on 0808 196 3646 to learn more about this service.

MyChart

We would encourage you to sign up for MyChart. This is the electronic patient portal at Cambridge University Hospitals that enables patients to securely access parts of their health record held within the hospital’s electronic patient record system (Epic). It is available via your home computer or mobile device.
