Cambridge IVF

It is important that every sample we analyse at Cambridge IVF arrives in perfect condition to ensure that we get the best possible and most accurate information from the sample provided. For patients producing samples at home by natural intercourse we have prepared a pack for home use to allow you to collect and transport your sample to us without risk of sample deterioration.

Kit Contents:

  1. Sterile single use sperm safe condom(s)
  2. A labelled sterile semen sample container
  3. A sample delivery form
  4. Sealable plastic bag

Instructions for use

Before you produce the sample

  1. Ensure you abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation to climax for 2-5 days prior to your appointment.
  2. Wash the penis and testicles or shower and ensure you remove all traces of the soap prior to producing the sample.
  3. Ensure that you follow the instructions and that the condom is correctly placed over the erect penis prior to intercourse.

Producing the sample

  1. Engage in sexual intercourse to orgasm as you would normally.
  2. Withdraw the penis post orgasm ensuring the condom is held at the base of the penile shaft.
  3. Remove the condom from the penis taking care not to spill any semen
  4. Tie a knot in open end of the condom and place it directly into the semen sample container
  5. Wash your hands
  6. Place the semen sample container into the sealable plastic bag

Transporting the sample to Cambridge IVF

  1. Place the bag into a pocket keeping it close to the body where possible to maintain its temperature during transit but DO NOT artificially heat the sample
  2. Ensure that the sample is delivered to Cambridge IVF as soon as possible after production and within 60 minutes at the latest.

Please remember to bring with you your referral form.

Bring photo ID with you as we will need to confirm your identity when you arrive with the sample.

On arrival at Cambridge IVF

  1. A member of our team will take you to a private room, check your identity against your photo ID and confirm that your referral form has been completed correctly.
  2. We will take your sample from you and perform the analysis.

Getting your test results

Results of the sample will available to your doctor within 10 working days although some GP surgeries may take up to 3 weeks to have the result available for you. This time is unfortunately GP surgery specific and beyond our control.
