How to use a pulse oximeter

Why have you been given this device?

You have been given a pulse oximeter as you have been discharged home with temporary oxygen therapy.

What is a Pulse oximeter?

A pulse oximeter is a device used to provide health care professionals with important clinical information. By using this device it will tell us what is your oxygen levels and heart rate are.

Using the pulse oximeter

The respiratory team will telephone you at home. You will be instructed to use the pulse oximeter to check your SpO2 level.

  1. To use the pulse oximeter, apply the finger probe on the finger and press the middle button power on. Do not press more than once as this will change screen view and may give incorrect interpretation/reading.
  2. Top number is your heart rate, Illustration above shows 69 bpm.
  3. Bottom number is your oxygen level – Illustration above showing 97%.
  4. Take off finger and the pulse oximeter will automatically turn off.

Depending on your oxygen saturations, we will advise you of a further plan.
