Computed Tomography (CT) Colonography with Buscopan and Iodine contrast injection

Aftercare

You will now be shown back to the waiting room. We recommend that you spend some time in the toilet to get rid of as much of the carbon dioxide gas and any retained fluid as possible. Deep breathing will also help in removing some of the carbon dioxide gas in your system.

Once you are dressed a member of staff will show back to our waiting room. You will need to wait 15 minutes for the cannula to be removed. You may now start eating and drinking as normal, although we do advise that you only have a light meal to start with. You will be offered a hot drink and biscuits whilst you wait to have your cannula removed. Once you have had your cannula removed you are free to leave the department.

You should not feel any after affects from this procedure, however, if you find you have any blurred vision after the intra-venous administration of Buscopan please do not drive until it has resolved.

Should you experience any severe pains or prolonged discomfort in your abdomen, or any redness or pain in your eyes, after you have left the hospital you should attend your local emergency department, explaining that you have recently had a CT colonography procedure, which involved the intra-venous administration of Buscopan.

You may have loose stools for the next 12-24 hours. It is important you continue to drink fluids to remain hydrated. If you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea please contact the CT department or out of hours GP.

Results

Once the images obtained from this procedure have been analysed a full report will be forwarded to the team/consultant who have/has referred you for this procedure. They will discuss the results with you and organise your follow-up appointment.
