Medical staff
Consultants
These are the most senior doctors on the neonatal unit and will oversee all of your baby’s care. They change on a weekly and weekend basis.
The consultant or registrar will aim to update you during the ward round, or will provide you with a thorough update on a weekly basis.
Registrars
These are senior doctors with a minimum of 5 years’ experience. They work alongside the consultants caring for your baby
Senior house officer (SHO)
These are doctors that have a minimum of 3 years’ experience. They work alongside their medical colleagues
Advanced neonatal nursing practitioner (ANNP)
ANNP’s have advanced qualifications in neonatal care and will work alongside the medical team.
Nursing staff
Matron and clinical lead nurses
These nurses have overall responsibility for the daily running of the unit and the nursing staff. The matron and clinical lead nurses are qualified nurses who have an additional neonatal intensive care qualification.
Senior sisters (Manger of the day MOTD or nurse in charge NIC)
These nurses have overall responsibility for the daily running of the unit and the nursing staff. The matron and clinical lead nurses are qualified nurses who have an additional neonatal intensive care qualification.
Junior sister
These nurses will provide care to babies throughout the unit and can take charge of the unit if required. They are qualified nurses who have an additional neonatal intensive care qualification.
Senior staff nurse
These nurses or qualified nurses who may have completed or are currently completing the additional neonatal intensive care qualification.
Staff nurse
These nurses are qualified nurses who are awaiting to complete the neonatal intensive care qualification.
Nursery nurses
The nursery nurses provide care for babies in special care as they have a qualification in special care. They may also work in the neonatal unit milk bank.
Neonatal assistant
The assistants support the unit by ensuring all supplies are stocked.
