EARRPS training courses

For staff directly involved in work with radiation, we have developed a regular programme of lectures and seminars to respond to training requirements in radiation protection throughout the region.

These include update days on legislative changes and general refresher courses for radiation protection supervisors for both x-rays and unsealed source work. More specialist courses are also provided for laser users and dental workers.

To view our course prices and to register, please see the EARRPS courses registration form.

Training courses for 2024-2025

FRCR Part 1 Radiology Physics Course

Dates: Starts September 10, for a full timetable please click here.

Aimed at Radiology Registrars preparing for the FRCR Part 1 Physics exam and Veterinary Surgeons working towards Specialist status in Diagnostic Imaging.

The course will cover the physics of X-Ray imaging (Radiography, Fluoroscopy & CT), Nuclear Medicine & PET, MRI and Ultrasound as well as the relevant UK legislation and practical radiation safety measures.

Sessions will involve a blend of lecture-style teaching, group discussion and practice exam questions, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions of the tutors.

RPS Training Course (Healthcare and Veterinary X-rays)

Dates: 18 October 2024 (in person) and 5 February 2025 (online)

Aimed at new Radiation Protection Supervisors working with x-rays, and existing RPSs with little formal training. The course will cover legislative requirements under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 including employer’s responsibilities, Local Rules and the role of the Radiation Protection Supervisor.

For part of the day, optional parallel sessions will focus on the role of the RPS in a veterinary setting. While this course will be relevant to all x-ray RPSs, a specific course for dental RPSs is listed below.

The course will include some online lectures that need to be watched before the day of the course. Note that the June course will not include a specific veterinary session.

Laser Core of Knowledge

Date: 6 September 2024 (Norwich)

This course covers all aspects of the Laser “Core of Knowledge” syllabus defined by the MHRA. It provides the general theoretical background in laser safety required by all staff using or assisting in the use of lasers in a clinical setting, including clinicians, ODPs and nurses.

Transport of Radioactive Material

Date: 15 July 2024, 2pm (online)

This is a short course covering the essential requirements for staff involved in the process of transporting radioactive materials, including those consigning radioactive material for transport.

Radiation Protection Update (X-Ray and Radioactive Materials)

Date: 5 December 2024 (in person)

This course is designed to provide an update and refresher for existing RPSs, and other staff with management responsibilities for radiation protection.

The course will cover recent changes in legislation and guidance, and will share lessons learnt from regulators. The material will be biased towards staff that work in the medical sector, but some of the content will be generic in its applicability.

The course is structured so that there will be a specific focus on areas working with diagnostic x-rays in the earlier part of the day and a focus on areas working with radioactive materials in the later part of the day.

See programme released closer to the time for details.

All delegates are welcome to attend all or part of the day as relevant to their role.

Radiation Protection Update (Radiotherapy)

Date: 10 December 2024, 1pm (online)

This meeting is designed to provide an update and refresher for existing RPSs, and other staff with management responsibilities for radiation protection in radiotherapy departments. It will cover recent changes in legislation and guidance, will share lessons learnt from the regulators and provide space for discussion of relevant topics of interest in the field of radiotherapy radiation protection.

There is no fee for this meeting as it is run collaboratively with colleagues from radiotherapy centres.

See programme released closer to the time for details.

Quality control (QC) testing in X-Ray imaging (Available to EARRPS customers only)

Pre-recorded lectures available on request.

This series of pre-recorded presentations gives an introduction for radiographers and X-Ray engineers to the in-house quality control procedures recommended in IPEM Report 91.

The talks cover a range of modalities; please talk to EARRPS about which you require so the relevant link can be sent to download the presentation files.
