Home therapies

Kidney (renal)

We offer two different types of home dialysis: home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Treatment options are usually discussed pre-dialysis with your renal consultant and Low Clearance team. We work in partnership with other renal services to ensure our patients are fully supported at home.

There are many benefits to taking on a home therapy including: better quality of life; increased freedom; reduced travel; reduced dietary and fluid restrictions; reduced symptom and medication; improved recovery time and ability to continue in employment.

There is also evidence to suggest that more frequent dialysis improves morbidity and mortality rates.

Referral information

Referrals usually come through the Low Clearance team. However, if your kidney function declines rapidly, you may find that you are on in-centre haemodialysis without ever receiving pre-dialysis education and/or treatment options. Please speak to your dialysis unit if you have an interest in performing a home therapy. Alternatively, contact the Home Therapies department 01223 400184 or email Home therapies for advice and guidance.

Shared care is also an option if a home therapy is not suitable.
