The dialysis access service is responsible for creation of definitive access for dialysis, including arterio-venous fistulae (AVFs), peritoneal dialysis catheters, and tunnelled dialysis lines, for patients with chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis in Cambridge, Huntingdon, West Suffolk, and Kings Lynn.
AVFs are created by the dialysis access surgeons (who are part of the transplant team) following review in a dialysis access clinic or as part of a one-stop service where review and creation happen in one sitting.
Peritoneal dialysis catheters may be inserted medically, under local anaesthetic, by one of the nephrology consultants or surgically, under general anaesthetic, by the surgical team.
Tunnelled dialysis lines are inserted and removed under local anaesthetic by the nephrology team.
Referral information
Patients are referred to the dialysis access service by their nephrology team.
