The Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory is located within Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Biomedical scientists in our department examine specimens for the presence of bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. In addition, they perform antimicrobial sensitivity testing and a range of molecular diagnostic tests. Clinical staff in the department interpret laboratory results and provide clinical advice on the management of patients with infection. They work closely with the infection control team in the surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections. In addition, they work with specialist antimicrobial pharmacists to develop antibiotic treatment guidelines and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
