As LGBT+ History Month draws to a close, we spoke to Adam Olivant, PFI Contracts Manager and member of our LGBT+ staff network.

Adam is stood outside the ATC and is wearing a short sleeved white shirt and grey body warmer with the CUH logo. He has short dark hair, a short beard and wears glasses.
Adam Olivant

I became a member of the LGBT+ staff network because I am passionate about supporting others especially surrounding equity, diversity and inclusion.

I wanted to connect with colleagues who share similar interests and values and to contribute to making CUH a more inclusive and supportive workplace.

Could you tell us a bit about your role in our hospitals?

I work as a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Contracts Manager within the Property Services department - part of the wider Capital, Estates and Facilities Management team here at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH).

I am responsible for managing the operational aspects of our PFI contract for the Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre (ATC), ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and in line with our contractual agreements.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most, is the opportunity to work closely with a diverse range of teams across CUH, as well as the challenge of ensuring that services run smoothly and meet the high standards we expect. The variety of tasks keeps things interesting, and I value the problem-solving and liaison with stakeholders within my role.

Tell us about your journey at CUH.

I originally joined CUH in 2013 as a Customer Service Assistant within the Pathology department, where I had various roles including working for the Pathology Partnership before parting ways late 2015.

I re-joined CUH in September 2023 joining the Property Services team where I am now supporting the PFI Contract for the Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre in overseeing contract management and ensuring compliance.

I enjoy working at CUH because of the collaborative culture and the shared commitment to providing excellent patient care. It’s rewarding to know that the work I do contributes to the overall functioning of the hospital, and I’m proud to be part of such a dedicated team.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A usual day involves a mix of administrative tasks, such as data analysis and reporting, alongside regular meetings with stakeholders to discuss contract performance and resolve any issues that arise. I also work on maintaining our contract documentation, ensuring that everything is up-to-date and compliant. No two days are the same, which keeps things engaging!

Tell us about an experience at CUH that really stands out to you.

One experience that stands out to me was when we worked on improving the efficiency of one of our key service providers. Through detailed analysis and collaboration with the team, we were able to identify areas for improvement and implement changes that ultimately enhanced service delivery.

This project had a direct impact on hospital operations and patient care, which made the outcome even more rewarding.

My role benefits our patients by ensuring that the behind-the-scenes services run smoothly. These services are vital to the hospital’s operations, and by managing the contract effectively, I help to ensure that everything from fire doors to air handling units supports the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Tell us a bit about you outside of work.

Outside of work, I enjoy many things, but two key parts of my life are that I am one of the founders of Cambridge Pride as it is now, including having many roles such as on the day being one of the event managers, to preparing for the event now taking the role as Director of Operations.

I am also the Regional Inclusion Advisor for RAF Air Cadets within the Central & East Region. This is a very rewarding role as it gives me an opportunity to inspire and support younger people (12 to 20 years old) within a uniformed youth organisation.
