Healthcare Science Specialism: Vascular Science
What does your job involve?
Carrying out diagnostic ultrasound scans of arteries and veins for a variety of conditions; such as aneurysms, blood clots within veins, narrowing's and blockages in arteries. The results of these scans are used to plan patients’ treatment and intervention and can also be used to monitor a patients condition over time. We sometimes carry out ultrasound scans after a patient has had an operation to ensure the problem has resolved.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Meeting a wide range of different patients and being able to use scientific knowledge to positively contribute to their care.
Research the different specialisms in healthcare science and once you have decided upon one, try and spend some time shadowing in a related department to make sure it is definitely something you would like to do.
What qualifications led you to this role?
A degree in Human Biology.

Participation in research.
Higher level specialist scientist training to become a consultant scientist.
