Conference turns spotlight on global health

The contribution of Cambridge and the East of England to improving global health has come under the spotlight.

The fourth East of England Global Health Conference was organised by Cambridge Global Health Partnerships (CGHP) and attracted 150 delegates welcomed by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) Chief Executive Officer, Roland Sinker.

It was held at Robinson College where delegates in person and online from as far afield at Rwanda and Ethiopia focused on building healthcare systems in the face of climate change and other challenges.

There were contributions from local practitioners, CUH and the University of Cambridge researchers, UK and overseas universities, experts from global health Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and from the wider NHS.

Topics covered everything from antimicrobial resistance, innovation, service design and healthcare training, to health partnerships, knowledge sharing, learning and innovation.

Keynote speakers included Liberal Democrat MP for South Cambridgeshire Pippa Heylings and Professor Joe Jarvis from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership.

Conference sessions enjoyed contributions from Lifebox, a global non-profit making surgery and anaesthesia safer; AMREF, an Africa-focused health NGO; the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; University of Derby, Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET), and CGHP members, partners and collaborators.

Mr Sinker, pictured above, told the conference

We face enormous pressures and challenges but also terrific opportunities in terms of how we keep our global population well and how we intervene early and in the right way when people are poorly.

How we work together to make the very best use of the resources that we have got is at the heart of the work that I know you will be doing throughout the conference.

Roland Sinker
