He qualified as a doctor in 1991 and has been an eye surgeon for over 30 years.

Simon loves his job passionately. He gets a great sense of satisfaction from using his hands to try and achieve the best outcomes possible for his patients. He considers it a privilege and great responsibility when patients put their faith in him to look after them. He loves the camaraderie and teamwork of the job with lots of human interaction with both patients and colleagues.

His areas of clinical practice are ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery including both functional problems, such as periocular tumours, eyelid cysts, ptosis (droopy upper eyelid), eyelid entropion and ectropion and cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), brow lifts and botulinum injection treatment.

He has particular expertise in transconjunctival minimally invasive lower lid blepharoplasty for lower lid bags and endoscopic scarless dacryocystorhinotomy (DCR) surgery for blocked tear ducts and watery eyes.

He is especially interested in the management of skin cancer on the eyelids and in the periocular area. He is a strong advocate of the use of MOHS micrographic surgery where appropriate to obtain the best surgical results and clinical outcomes.

He also performs small incision bespoke phacoemulsification cataract surgery and sees all general ophthalmic complaints.

Simon has for many years carried out regular pro bono charitable work overseas including in rural Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Vietnam and the Middle East.

He is filmed undertaking a partial eye removal and reconstruction for patient Sue, who has a blind painful eye, and a procedure to help patient Kate who has problems closing her eye due to nerve damage and requires insertion of special weights to help her eye close better.

Simon has previously worked for BBC World Service Radio Pashto and Persian Section in Afghanistan. Other past employment includes farm worker, barman, pub to pub sea food salesman and banana plantation labourer.

In his spare time Simon is a keen ski mountaineer, traveller, adventurer and amateur philosopher. His current obsession is long distance cycle touring with his most recent tour being from London to Nice. He is currently planning his route to cycle the length of Japan.
