Invictus Games

The project innovation team at Addenbrooke's hospital worked with cyclist, Wayne Harrold, to create an innovative prosthetic leg to help him compete in the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney.

Wayne went on to win a bronze medal at the Invictus Games and was the fastest amputee cyclist in the 2018 event.

A team of clinical and mechanical engineers and prosthetists at Addenbrooke's Hospital all helped Wayne Harrold to win a bronze medal at the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney.

Wayne worked with the Project Innovation Team at Addenbrooke's Hospital to create a leg which 'could push the bike to at least 40 miles an hour, was aerodynamic and could win a medal'.

As a result, Wayne was the fastest amputee cyclist at the 2018 Invictus Games and his prosthetic leg was recorded as moving at 39.5 miles per hour.

Since the games, Wayne has gone on to break the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) MC4 one hour challenge, covering a distance of 42.460km at the Derby velodrome on 11th January 2020.
